Maui is known as the island of the valley because of the valley between its two volcanoes. Maui is also known as one of the best places to go snorkeling due to the vast amount of great spots you can go to.  Not only that, but it’s also the best whale watching island from October to February. The best observations occur in December and January when the whales make the coast of Maui their winter playground. This is typically when they are born and enjoy the shallow tropical waters of the Au’au Channel off the coast of Maui.  They come back every year, and if you’re on Maui during the whale watching season, the tour operators will guarantee you a sighting or you’ll get another free ride.

Regardless of if there’s whales or not though, Maui is the premier island when it comes to snorkeling.  If you want to see tropical fish, turtles, stingrays, dolphins, and much more, you need to head to Maui.  Plus, if you don’t feel like venturing out on your own, there are lots of Maui snorkeling tours you can go on, with some of the best being offered by Live Your Aloha.

If you’re in the mood for shopping, Lahaina is an old whaling village that has become one of Maui’s premier shopping experiences, with a 1 1/2 mile-long street with shops, shops and more shops, and some great restaurants where you can rejuvenate, have a Mai Thai, and catch your breath.  Lahaina also has one of the largest banyan trees in the world, with branches that span an entire city block, where you’ll often find local art shows taking place in the shade.

Molokini Crater

There’s so much aquatic life near Molokini Crater, that it is truly a once in a lifetime experience.  All you have to do is grab a snorkel mask, some fins, and head on out to the beautiful blue waters.

Honolua is considered by locals to be the best place for snorkeling and diving in Maui, while Kapalua Bay is characterized by calm waters, safe swimming, and one of the best beaches in the world. Makena offers excellent snorkeling opportunities in caves and endangered green sea turtles.

Other Hawaii snorkeling sites that are worth getting wet and exploring are the Hanauma Bay Nature Park on Oahu, a marine reserve; and Waimea Bay, known for surfing. One thing to note though is that snorkeling is not allowed in the winter months due to the high surf, so make sure it’s allowed before you plan your trip. On the Big Island, there are Kealakekua Bay and Hapuna Beach. If you want to snorkel in Kauai, try Kee Beach and Poipu Beach Park.

Last note

Wherever your Hawaiian snorkeling trip takes you on the islands, you can be sure that there is virtually no bad place to dip your feet! But just make sure you don’t snorkel alone, snorkel in safe waters, and pay attention to warning signs, as well as watch out for high surf. And do not feed the fish!
